In June 2025, I had the opportunity to photograph two young women as they prepared to leave for their prom. This was a new area of practice for me, and an experience that allowed me to step beyond my usual focus within equine photography and explore portraiture in a more personal and celebratory context.
I felt honoured to be trusted to capture such an important and memorable occasion, not only for the two young women, but also for their families. Prom marks a significant milestone, and I approached the shoot with an awareness of the emotional value these images would hold beyond the event itself.
The session allowed me to explore portrait photography through a combination of posed and natural moments, focusing on expression, styling, and the atmosphere surrounding the occasion. I was interested in capturing both polished portraits and quieter, candid interactions that reflected personality, confidence, and the excitement of the day.
This experience also gave me the opportunity to develop skills beyond my usual practice, particularly in directing subjects, working with natural light, and considering how portraiture can preserve not just appearance, but a sense of occasion and memory.
Although this was a new approach for me, it opened my interest in exploring portraiture further and showed how my attention to detail, composition, and creating meaningful images can translate across different photographic genres.
The photographs from this shoot represent an early step in broadening my practice and experimenting with work beyond equine photography, while continuing to focus on producing images that feel both visually strong and personally significant.
